Product Description
The ABB PM858K01 3BSE082895R1 is a processor unit for the ABB AC 800M control system. It uses an MPC866 processor and provides Ethernet and serial communication interfaces for control network connections and configuration access. Furthermore, it supports CPU redundancy configurations and connects to CEX-Bus communication modules and S800 I/O clusters. Its CompactFlash interface also provides access to removable storage.
Processor and Memory
The PM858K01 CPU board integrates the main processing and memory components required to execute controller applications. It includes a real-time clock, LED status indicators, an INIT push button and a CompactFlash interface.
The controller provides 16 MB of memory, with 7.147 MB available for applications. In addition, it supports up to 32 applications per controller, with a maximum of 64 programs and 128 diagrams per application. Users can configure up to 32 tasks and 32 different cycle times.
Communication Interfaces
The PM858K01 baseplate provides two RJ45 Ethernet ports (CN1 and CN2) for Control Network connections. It also includes two RJ45 serial ports with different communication functions.
- COM3: RS-232C interface with modem control signals.
- COM4: Isolated serial interface for connecting a configuration tool.
- CEX-Bus: Supports up to 12 communication modules, with a maximum supply current of 2.4 A.
Meanwhile, the controller supports clock synchronization between AC 800M controllers with an accuracy of 1 ms through the CNCP protocol. Its event queue can store up to 3,000 events per OPC client.
CPU Redundancy and I/O Expansion
The PM858K01 supports CPU redundancy configurations for higher system availability. Redundancy can cover the CPU, CEX-Bus, communication interfaces and S800 I/O. The specified maximum switchover time in a redundant configuration is 10 ms.
For I/O expansion, the controller supports different ModuleBus cluster arrangements depending on the CPU configuration. A non-redundant CPU supports one electrical and seven optical I/O clusters, while a redundant CPU supports seven optical clusters. Therefore, the selected I/O arrangement should match the controller redundancy configuration.
Power Supply and Installation
The controller operates from a 24 VDC supply, with an accepted input range of 19.2 to 30 VDC. It also provides a redundant power supply status input and includes a 3.6 V lithium backup battery.
Furthermore, the TP830 baseplate uses a slide-and-lock mechanism for DIN rail attachment and removal. Each baseplate carries a unique Ethernet address label, which identifies the hardware and can be used to distinguish individual CPUs during configuration and maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does the ABB PM858K01 support CPU redundancy?
A: Yes. The PM858K01 supports redundant CPU configurations, including redundancy for the CPU, CEX-Bus, communication interfaces and S800 I/O. The specified maximum switchover time is 10 ms.
Q: What communication interfaces does the PM858K01 provide?
A: It provides two RJ45 Ethernet ports (CN1 and CN2) for Control Network connections, plus two serial ports. COM3 supports RS-232C with modem control signals, while isolated COM4 connects to a configuration tool.
Q: What is the difference between the I/O cluster arrangements for redundant and non-redundant CPUs?
A: A non-redundant CPU supports one electrical and seven optical ModuleBus I/O clusters. A redundant CPU supports seven optical clusters. The I/O configuration must therefore correspond to the selected CPU arrangement.
