Modul koneksi bus RER 103 berfungsi sebagai unit antarmuka antara perangkat RE_ 500 dan bus serat optik SPA, LON® dan IEC 60870-5-103. Modul koneksi bus mengubah sinyal optik masuk dari bus SPA, LON® dan IEC_103 menjadi sinyal listrik RS-485 untuk perangkat RE_ 500 dan sebaliknya. Modul ini dipasang pada konektor subminiatur tipe D RS-485 di pelat belakang perangkat RE_500. Modul ini dapat digunakan bersama dengan perangkat RE_500 apa pun yang dilengkapi dengan konektor tipe D 9-pin. Modul koneksi bus mendapatkan daya dari konektor tipe D perangkat RE_500.

Modul Koneksi Bus RER 103 dapat digunakan dalam topologi bus tipe Loop dan Star. Selain itu, status idle garis modul dapat dipilih. Lampu dapat dinyalakan atau dimatikan. Pemilihan Loop/Star dan lampu nyala/mati dilakukan dengan jumper. Dalam topologi Loop, modul RER 103 meneruskan pesan yang diterima dari antarmuka serat optik baik ke pemancar serat optik maupun antarmuka RS-485. Dalam topologi Star, modul meneruskan pesan yang diterima dari penerima serat optik hanya ke antarmuka RS-485. Pesan yang diterima dari antarmuka RS-485 diteruskan ke pemancar serat optik dalam kedua topologi bus. Komunikasi bus SPA menggunakan mode Loop dan lampu mati, ketika jumper modul berada pada posisi Loop dan lampu mati. Komunikasi bus LON® menggunakan mode Star dan lampu mati, ketika jumper modul berada pada posisi Star dan lampu mati. Komunikasi bus IEC_103 menggunakan mode Star dan lampu nyala atau mati, ketika jumper modul berada pada posisi Star dan lampu nyala atau mati.
